When Advertising, it’s not always better to be the lone wolf.

Before using a certain medium to advertise, consider those that went before you. If you are thinking of advertising in a newspaper for example, consider how many of your competitors are in the same paper. If you don’t see any competitors at all, there may be a good reason for it.

Don’t think for one moment that your the first guy to think of using this particular medium to advertise. It is remotely possible you are but chances are slim you’d be the first person to pioneer this advertising path.

I think of this psychology much like the feeling one gets when passing a slot machine. Hmmm… no one else is playing this one, I think I’ll give it a try, man oh man, it is calling my name. Even in the world of gambling, the smart players go where the machines are known to pay off more often.

There are several ways to get your information into the decision maker’s hands.

Use “The Stealth Mail Method”. You’ve heard the expression if it walks like and duck and quacks like a duck it’s probably a duck. Everyday the gatekeeper sorts through the bosses mail just like you and I do. Right over the trash can. If you don’t make it into the “A” pile you’re done for. So make your mail piece look like a personal letter. Don’t use a business envelope that telegraphs “THIS IS FROM THE XYZ COMPANY” Use a plain #10 envelope without any return address, or if you use a return address make it from you. Your name and address so it resembles a personal mail piece.

Don’t use the company postage machine. If you go to all the trouble of the plain envelope don’t flag the screener with the business postage indicia that says “Hey I’m trying to pull a fast one on you!” Use regular old postage stamps so it appears to be even more like a personal piece of mail. Statistics show if you use more than one stamp the likelihood of your piece being opened increases. Consider putting the stamp on a little crooked. Don’t be anal and be sure it’s the same distance form the side as from the top. This will give you another bump.

If you can hand address the envelope this is another sign it is from a person. Blue ink is best. Again don’t make it perfect. Of course by all means DO NOT spell anything incorrectly, especially their name.

If all else fails, send your letter in a pastel greeting card envelope. Have a female (if your writing to a guy) hand address the letter. Then soak it in perfume. I guarantee the secretary will not open that piece no matter how tempted she is. Of course you better have some great information and an explanation that you really have something important you need to get to your target.

Now that you have the mail in his hand, when you call and the screener asks what are your calling for you can say Mr. Jones is expecting my call. It’s in regard to a piece of correspondence he received.

Anyone who uses a computer on a regular basis has been faced with a 404 error message. This aggravating little obstacle to our research or fun-search endeavors can be a bit of an annoyance for most of us. The 404 error message commonly appears when we request a URL that the server does not have.

For some reason, the server chooses to simply flash a 404 error message rather than providing us with the information that we need. All we know from the information provided is that the page has not been found. This is usually a default message that most Web servers return when someone requests a URL that the server does not have. This is not to suggest that the URL does not exist.

The 404 error message is in violation to basic rules for error messages in general, according to some of its critics. The critics suggest that the 404 error message needs to be written in layman’s terms so anyone who reads it understands exactly what has happened. Every time I have gotten one, I immediately thought that I made a mistake.

Of course, the first thing we do when we make a mistake is re-enter the information just to be faced with another 404 error message. We may try again and again until we reach the number of entering the same information over and over again that makes us realize that it may not be entirely our fault.

Unfortunately, we usually check one more time just to be sure. The next step is to blame our source of information. We double-check our source to make sure that we were given the right URL only to see that we were right. Filled with self-doubt, we go right back on to the server and enter the same URL again just to find a 404 error message staring right back at us.

We do all of this simply because the server broke a very important rule. They need to make the error message clear as day for anyone using the server, not just the technically-savvy individuals who know not to waste time entering and re-entering the same URL over and over again.

Sometimes it is the user’s fault but there is no way of knowing this through the 404 error message. The second rule the servers break is not specifying what the user has done wrong. The vague information usually leaves the server confused and frustrated. It is aggravating when you know that there is something wrong but you don’t know what it is.
