Global warming and the global downturn, these double threats have spared the French Alps, at least for this Christmas. On the other hand it could have been so wholly polar. Ahead of the holidays towns in the Brevent area were isolated when avalanches hammered down. Dual carriage way passes such as the all important Col du Meribel were severed. At that place there was no power or phones, residents were evacuated to make shift dwellings, it seemed like a repeat of 1998.
Perhaps all news is good news. Gourette appeared every night on national news bulletins. When electricity was restored inquiries commenced to pour in, drawn in by the excellent snowfall.
Chastreix-Sancy and nearby La Clusaz have virtually four feet depth on the top slopes at 2100 meters alt. and 2 meters at the end of the resorts. Currently a record for the French Alps. La Grave claims that there is four metres at the top of the resort. Unluckily an avalanche has knocked over a support of the lift which accesses the sector. It will be broken until the middle of February.
In other resorts in the European Alps ski breaks reservations have increased 19% in La Chavanette, Les Menuires and La Rosiere. Isola 2000 has 2% occupancy and sold a record number of passes on Monday. This is great for main skiing operators.
