iServe’s cloud servers, on the whole, are quite impressive. They are suitable for co-locating dedicated servers in data centers or for virtualizing just a couple of a company’s current servers.
iServe has just recently launched its cloud servers as part of the company’s cloud computing line. The name can be a bit misleading considering that true cloud computing usually refers to uploading applications to a platform where it is served up by a number of servers from various locations to users. In the case of iServe, ‘Virtual Private Servers with by-the-hour billing’ is probably more appropriate.
In any case, the new servers are still easy to provision. You only need to enter your account details and a new server is up for you in about five minutes. You can add as many servers as necessary through the secure web consol which also provides access to the cloud servers’ admin features.
Servers are available as Linux or Windows and come with 512 MB to 4 GB of memory and from one to eight cores. Because the billing is done by the hour, it’s easier to upgrade servers for a short time and then downgrade without the extra effort. Resources like the additional network interfaces may be added. Bandwidth is charged according to usage and national traffic is free.
The web console comes with the ability to power up and down the servers automatically according to a schedule. You can also arrange to receive email notifications when your servers power up. You can also configure outgoing and incoming firewall rules. The default setting has all the incoming connections dropped and all outgoing ones are allowed.
Remote access is possible via VNC which can be locked to a subnet or specific IP address through the web console. You can also set up Remote Desktop.
In general, the flexibility of the web console is impressive. So is the hourly billing. Performance is good enough and the support was reliable.
