MAC Code Rules No Longer Needed for Changing Broadband Service Providers

Telecoms regulatory body Ofcom has recently announced that the MAC code rules governing the switching of broadband service providers by users is no longer valid. These rules were initiated to ensure safe and quick migration processes between users through the creation of the GC22 enforcement programme. These rules were first established in February 2007, where the customer wanting to change service providers was given a MAC code that was used to monitor the entire process.

However, recent developments in the field along with the decline in the number of complaints against MAC codes have led Ofcom to come to the decision that there is no need for such close monitoring. According to latest statistics, the number of MAC-related complaints has fallen from 825 in March 2007 to a mere 147 in September 2009. This has led Ofcom to believe and state that most broadband providers are complying with the provisions of GC22 and therefore it has become easier for a subscriber to change service providers without any hassle.

Having said that, Ofcom chose to mention the name of Pipex, a service provider that according to the regulatory body did not comply with the provisions initially. However, after Ofcom issued a notice against the company, there has been a steady fall in the number of complaints against the service provider.

In the report issued by Ofcom in its website, the regulatory body has specifically mentioned that it is happy that Pipex has complied with the notification and therefore there is no need for enforcement. However, Ofcom has assured subscribers that it will still monitor the complaints that are related to MAC despite the closure of the enforcement programme.
